I’m Séan 👋 a London-based Senior Interaction Designer at the Government Digital Service.

I currently work on GOV.UK One Login and Wallet, designing native iOS and Android apps. Before GDS, I spent several years at the BBC, working across BBC Monitoring, Discoverability initiatives and News Visual Journalism, where I ran user research, led design teams and built components used across BBC News and Sport. Earlier, I worked at ODI and NatCen.

Outside work I like to build things - I’ve shipped a SwiftUI app to the App Store, Pluviophile: Thunderstorm mix, go check it out. I play and make games, and I shoot film on a Nikon 35Ti, where every frame counts.

Experience

  1. Senior Interaction Designer

    GDS
    November 2025 to present

I work on GOV.UK One Login, which lets people sign in and prove their identity for government services, and GOV.UK Wallet, which keeps documents like the Veteran Card on their phone. I design for the native iOS and Android apps, building consistent patterns that have to work for everyone in the country.

  2. Senior UX Designer

    BBC UX&D, Backstage
    September 2024 to November 2025

I designed personalised B2B experiences for BBC Monitoring’s global customers. I led the My Feeds redesign from brief to build, running stakeholder workshops, prototyping in Figma and setting up ways of working with an external agency. I also built an internal AI tool that helps journalists research and analyse live news broadcasts.

  3. UX Designer

    BBC UX&D, Discoverability
    May 2022 to September 2024

I worked across web, mobile and TV on how audiences find BBC content and why they come back. I led user research and prototyping for the Path to Fandom OKR and ran a two-day design sprint on short form content. I also delivered a search combobox for News and Sport that lifted click-through on market data searches by 7%.

  4. UX + Editorial Designer

    BBC News, Visual Journalism
    June 2018 to May 2022

I designed news products from research to launch, working with journalists, researchers and engineers. I made real-time maps, charts and infographics to tight deadlines, translated into more than 40 languages for World Service. I also built templates and style guides for the team and mentored junior designers.

  5. Senior Designer

    ODI
    October 2017 to June 2018

I led the design of ODI’s financial transparency portal with an external agency, publishing £115m of data across 30 projects in 22 countries. I also mentored junior designers, created templates for the whole organisation and managed design budgets and suppliers.

  6. Designer

    ODI
    September 2015 to October 2017

I designed across print and digital, turning research into infographics for reports and social media. Over time I became the person colleagues came to for design advice, helping non-designers make work that served their audiences.

  7. Graphic Designer

    NatCen
    January 2013 to September 2015

I joined the National Centre for Social Research as an intern and stayed on as their in-house designer. I started with participant letters, leaflets and questionnaires, then moved on to design systems for reports, presentations and social media. I taught myself HTML and animation along the way.

  8. Junior Graphic Designer

    MADISONSOHO
    July 2011 to September 2011

A summer internship in Birmingham during university. I edited photos, made illustrations and created assets, and got my first look at how a working studio runs.
